Item Details
Description
# 22 for 30 shares to J. B. Chinn. Signed by C. A. Hill and president G. W. Sawyer. Dateline Virginia N. T. 1864. Incorporated November 21, 1863. Not cancelled. 25c Certificate revenue stamp. Location: Summit Mining District, Storey County, N. T. This is a rare variety of the Summit Lake or the Flowery District. Steam train vignette. An early map shows the district on the edge of Carson Rapids City. Often called Mineral City, this mining camp would become one with Dayton. Once considered for Lyon County Seat. Underprint pink '$240,000.' Printer: Enterprise Book and Job, Printing House, C St. This would be the same time period Samuel Clemens was working at the Enterprise. Excellent condition with no edge, corner, pin hole or discoloration issues. Slightest staining upper left. Known for their lack of color, this is one of the more colorful Nevada stock certificates. Notes on Summit (Lake) district included. History of Carson Rapids City through California newspapers included.
****Important Additional Note: This certificate represents what is or can be exceptionally difficult in professional research. The cert itself has a paradox staring the researcher right in the face: it is datelined Virginia City, NT, yet way over on the left margin is ìLander Countyî. It never says the mine is in Lander County. So the question begs: is the mine in Lander or Virginia City (Storey County or nearby)? Was the Company organized in Lander, but the mine in Storey, or vice versa?
Here is another paradox. There are ìPhoenixî mines in both counties! And yet another paradox: there are Summit Districts in both counties! Our describer wrote about the Phoenix near the Comstock. I wrote about the Phoenix in Lander way back in the Filer Sales, Filer III, November 2000, lot 461. ìThe Summit District is on the eastern slope of Bunker Hill, next to Smoky Valley on the southern boundary of the CountyÖî I also wrote about each of the signers. My gut from 45 years of experience is that the piece here is from Lander County. One day when the Reese River Revile is digitized, Iíll bet we find out for sure.
