Description
Ira C. Denise (American, 1840-?), signed l.l., Most notable as a Cincinnati landscape painter, Ira C. Denise enlisted with the New York National Guard Zouaves during the Civil War. A member of the 10th Infantry Regiment, Denise served for two years, from 1861-1863. During that time, Denise made sketches of his surroundings - this painting could have been made after a preliminary drawing. Depicted here is the Zouave encampment with possibly Middletown or Boonsboro, MD in the background. This is a probable site because the 10th Regiment was stationed there in September 1862.
