Salnave Philippe-Auguste
(Haitian/Saint Marc, 1908-1989)
Tree of Life with Fruit and Yellow Flowers, circa early 1970s
Oil on masonite, 30 x 19 7/8 inches
Framed dimensions: 36 3/8 x 26 1/2 inches
Provenance:
Acquired at Galleria Botello, San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the 1970's
Anne Grimmer-James Fastenrath Collection
Lot Essay: A poet and lawyer by profession, Philippe-Auguste often, in the manner of Matisse's later practice, worked with cut-outs. For Philippe-Auguste, however, the cut-outs were primarily a foundational layering tool that, once traced, allowed him to paint with playful combinations of saturated color. From landscapes to mythical figures, historical and literary archetypes are reinterpreted through Philippe-Auguste's fantastical magical imagination.
