The Avid Collector Sale

Paintings & Sculpture Auction: Featuring the Haitian Art Collections of Anne Grimmer & Jim Fastenrath, Dr. Bob Brictson, Fahimie Marks. From the early 1970's, Anne Grimmer and Jim Fastenrath would frequently visit Haiti. Their adventurous spirit brought them to Jacmel, where they renovated an old house, filling it with art. As they traveled throughout Haiti, falling in love with its people, with everything this island nation presents, Jim & Anne became avid collectors. In the early days, without much fanfare, many of their art treasures were carried, or should we say over-carried on the plane home to DC. Over the years Anne graciously opened up her homes for art tours. She welcomed Haitian Art collectors and enthusiasts at houses in Washington DC and the New Orleans' Marigny. After many years enjoying the art on her walls she says "now it's time to pass it on to others". Our Dec. 4th sale has 75 lots from their collection. In the 1970's several Americans engaged with Haitian Art had residences and spent considerable time in Jacmel, including Bob Brictson, Carol Cleaver & Selden Rodman. This sale includes 50+ lots from the Dr. Bob Brictson Estate. Bob, an avid collector and Haitian art gallerist, would purchase and renovate an old Jacmel home. Bob was in an enviable position to acquire early St. Soleil paintings, and sparked close friendships with many Haitian artists, particularly with Edger Jean-Baptiste and Prefete Duffaut. Fahimie Marks is an art world maverick. In the 1960's she was the founder of Naive Art, a singular Madison Avenue gallery featuring fine works by Haitian artists. As a collector, Fahimie had the great ability to identify and collect paintings that mirror her great admiration for Haitian customs, spiritual beliefs and expression. After amassing, along with her beloved husband Sidney, a large collection of Haitian master paintings, Fahimie would auction them at Christie's New York.
