Description
Salnave Philippe-Auguste (Haitian/Saint Marc, 1908-1989)
Adam and Eve/Paradise Terrestrial, number 30,
circa mid 1970's
Lithograph print on paper, 23 x 35 inches
Framed dimensions: 24 1/4 inches x 36 1/4 inches
Double signature; one in block print and hand signed
Provenance:
Anne Grimmer-James Fastenrath Collection
Lot Essay:
A poet and lawyer by profession, Philippe-Auguste often, in the manner of Matisse's later practice, worked with cut-outs. For Philippe-Auguste, however, the cut-outs were primarily a foundational layering tool that, once traced, allowed him to paint with playful combinations of saturated color. From landscapes to mythical figures, historical and literary archetypes are reinterpreted through Philippe-Auguste's fantastical magical imagination.
