Description
A Makonde Body Mask Tanzania, c. late 19th to early 20th century A female torso. Hardwood with a dark stain, large earthenware breasts and umbilicus with a black color. Earthenware or resin raised lines, dots, and semicircles on the torso representing scarification marks. In good condition, appropriate for age, origin, and mediums; some cracks and losses on the proper left breast, chips and chunks missing from lower proper right and along bottom; insect damage on the verso. Provenance: Keletigui Kaba, New York, NY Ex-collection of Nkurunziza Richard Sr., first curator of the National Museum in Kinshasa, as of the 1970s
