Pope (Alexander) The Rape of the Lock. An Heroi-Comical Poem, In Five Canto's, first separate, first complete and first illustrated edition, title in red and black, engraved frontispiece, 5 plates by Claude du Bose after Louis de Guernier, head-pieces, initial and tail-piece by Simon Gribelin, later full crushed morocco, gilt, by Riviere, g.e., upper joint cracked and cover almost detached, cloth slip-case, [Foxon P942; Rothschild 1570], 8vo, Printed for Bernard Lintott, 1714.
⁂ When it was originally published in 1712 in Miscellaneous Poems and Translations, the Rape of the Lock comprised only 2 cantos. This expanded and illustrated version was published 2 years later and was an instant hit with 3000 copies selling out in a matter of a few days.
