A historical novel "The Red City" is set in Philadelphia in the 1790s, during the second term of George Washington's Presidency when the city served as the temporary capital of the United States. Its general theme is of the city's "greatness" during this era. The "red city" of the title is a reference to the red brick used for many of Philadelphia's public and private buildings in the eighteenth century. The book also depicts the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793, which engulfed the city.

Silas Weir Mitchell (1829 -1914) was an American physician, scientist, novelist, and poet. He is considered the father of medical neurology, and he discovered causalgia (complex regional pain syndrome) and erythromelalgia, and pioneered the rest cure. His medical texts include Injuries of Nerves and Their Consequences (1872) and Fat and Blood (1877). Mitchell's disease (erythromelalgia) is named after him. He also coined the term phantom limb during his study of an amputee. Mitchell discovered and treated causalgia (today known as CRPS/RSD), a condition most often encountered by hand surgeons. Mitchell is considered the father of medical neurology and a pioneer of "evidence-based" or "scientific" medicine. He was also a psychiatrist, toxicologist, author, poet, and celebrity in Europe as well as America. His contemporaries considered him a genius no less than Benjamin Franklin.

In 1866, Mitchell published a short story in the Atlantic Monthly resting upon both somatic and psychological insights entitled "The Case of George Dedlow". From that point onward, Mitchell divided his attention between scientific and literary pursuits. He wrote juvenile stories, several volumes of verse and prose fiction which earned him a leading place among American authors at the close of the 19th century. His historical novels in particular, notably Hugh Wynne (1897), The Adventures of Francois (1898), The Youth of Washington (1904), and The Red City (1909), are among the best of their genre.

Arthur Ignatius Keller (1867-1924) was a United States painter and illustrator. He took up drawing at the National Academy, New York as a student of Professor Wilmarth. In Munich he studied painting with Professor Loeffts. Keller worked in oil and watercolor. He won awards including the First Class Medal at the National Academy, the Philadelphia Art Club gold medal, Paris Exposition of 1900 silver medal, at the St. Louis Exposition of 1904 he won gold and silver medals. In San Francisco he was awarded the gold medal of the Panama Pacific International Exposition. Some of his oil and watercolor artworks were acquired by prominent galleries around the world.

Keller worked as illustrator for newspapers and magazines, and created book illustrations for authors such as F. Hopkinson Smith, Thomas Dixon, Kathleen Norris, Dr. S. Weir Mitchell, and Jeffrey Farnol. He illustrated The Virginian (Wister), Kate Bonnet (Stockton), The Right of Way (Gilbert Parker), and the stories of Bret Harte.
