"The Battle Summer, Rein of Blouse. Being Transcripts From Personal Observation in Paris, During the Year 1848" by Ik. Marvel. Published by Charles Scribner, New York, 1853, later printing of the first edition (1850); illustrated with engraved frontispiece and add. title page.
Hard boards, original publisher's cloth [some fade, wear, rounded corners, spine ends damages: see photos]; gold stamped spine, 5" x 7.1/2"; frontispiece with tissue guard, extra engraved additional title page [some foxing], 289 pages on high quality heavy paper, a little soiling, very good condition.
This work is a collection of author's impressions and observations of the 1848 Revolution in France (February Revolution) that ended the Orleans monarchy and ushered in the Second Republic.
Donald Grant Mitchell, [1822-1908], who wrote under the pseudonym "Ik Marvel", was an American essayist and novelist, whose most popular work was "Reveries of a Bachelor". Oliver Wendell Holmes called him "one of the pleasantest of our American writers."
