This is the revised and enlarged edition of the “The American Loyalists” which came out in 1847. (The full title of the 1847 edition is “The American Loyalists: or Biographical Sketches of Adherents to the British Crown in the War of the Revolution. Alphabetically Arranged. With a Preliminary Historical Essay”, which was 733 pages long.) Volume I has a five-page Preface, four pages for Contents, a Preliminary Historical Essay and 608 pages of text, and the signature of “A. G. Bullock” on the rear blank endpapers, while Volume II has 468 pages of text, an index called “Fragments” which is 131 pages long, for a total of 600 pages, and the signature of “A. G. Bullock” on the front blank endpapers. Lorenzo Sabine (1803 - 1877) was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts now more remembered for his research and writing about the Loyalists of the American Revolution than as a public servant. From early childhood, Sabine was “revolution-mad” - those were his own words. But when he moved to Maine in 1821, he had the profound insight that "there was more than one side to the Revolution." Prior to this "every 'Tory' was as bad as bad could be, every 'son of Liberty' as good as possible.” During the 1840’s, Sabine published the results of his research in the North American Review (the United States' first literary magazine). The article was not well received by "patriotic" Americans. One of the few to applaud his research and writing was Harvard-based historian Jared Sparks. When Sabine’s writing came out in book form in 1847, a firestorm of controversy erupted.Sabine’s work remains to this day the standard biographical dictionary of the Loyalists. It focuses on the coming of the Revolution and the reasons for Americans rebelling or staying loyal to the King, and there are three distinct parts to the book: an historical essay of some 150 pages; biographical sketches, arranged alphabetically, comprising the vast bulk of the work; and some 130 pages of “Fragments” - brief notes about nearly 1,500 Loyalists not covered in the biographies. The sketches include a great deal of material on the Loyalists who settled in Canada, particularly New Brunswick, as well as information about a Loyalist’s place of birth and death, residence, occupation or trade, military service, wives, children and other family members, an indication as to whether the person was banished, proscribed, or had land confiscated, and miscellany of biographical significance. See Sabin 74773. Augustus George Bullock (1847 - 1926) was the son of Massachusetts Governor Alexander Hamilton Bullock. Born in Connecticut, Augustus moved to Worcester, Mass. as a child and eventually became a director in the Norwich & Worcester railroad and helped found the Worcester Art Museum.The books were very controversial and a great starting point for people who want to know more about the loyalists and what they went through during the Revolutionary War and afterwards. The books are 8vo. and measure 8 1/2 x 5 7/8 in. wide, with tight bindings and clean pages, light rubbing along the edges of the boards and at the tips, a small quarter-inch peel along the front edge of Volume I, and a very attractive set. #1636#24
