Writings of Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742-1799), German physicist, satirist, and confessed Anglophile. As a scientist, he was the first to hold a professorship explicitly dedicated to experimental physics in Germany. He is remembered for these posthumously published notebooks, which he himself called sudelbücher, a description modeled on the English bookkeeping term "waste books" or "scrapbooks", and for his discovery of tree-like electrical discharge patterns now called Lichtenberg figures. These figures are the subject of the eight folding plates at the rear of the final volume. Volumes I and II with ownership signature of Lorenz Eitner, art historian and longtime director of the Stanford Museum, now the Cantor Center.
Vol. II has imprint: Go?ttingen, In der Dieterichschen buchhandlung, 1801; Vols. III-IX: Bey H. Dieterich, 1801-1806.
