Lear's account of his 1848 travels through the wild backlands of the Ottoman Empire – Albania and Greece. The work is notable not only for his romantic landscapes, but for its record of Albanian life, natural history, and culture. Early gift inscription from Rev. Ellis Ashton, Rector of Huyton, to his niece Alice Ashton, dated 1867. Rev. Ellis Ashton was from a landed family in England and both a patron and correspondent of Lear's. Bookseller label on front pastedown, bookbinder's label of Remnant and Edmonds on rear pastedown.

Condition

Rubbing with mild fraying at extremities; front hinge starting, slight nick to title page at gutter, a bit of foxing to leaves and plates; very good.
