Description
1892 1ed Whymper Travels in Andes Matterhorn Alpine Illustrated Voyages MAPS
Mountaineer and engraver Edward Whymper, best known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, trained as a wood engraver from an early age. Whymper was introduced to mountaineering when he was commissioned by the publisher William Longman to make illustrations of the Alps. This spurred him to make other climbs, including many first ascents, exploring the Alps, Canadian Rockies, Greenland, and South America.
"Often considered his magnum opus, Travels among the Great Andes of the Equator (1891-2) combines a popular account of his ascents with his detailed scientific observations" (DNB)
This work ‘Travels Amongst the Great Andes of the Equator’ mixes scientific inquiry with recollections of the dramatic and dangerous events during the climbs of Whymper’s travels to Ecuador with mountaineers J. A. Carrel and Louis Carrel where they climbed mountains including Chimborazo and Cotopaxi to investigate altitude sickness, collecting 8000 zoological and botanical specimens along the way. Engravings bring his explorations, including the journeys up the tallest mountain in Ecuador and an active volcano, to life.
