Fine Early 20th C. African Anyi Wood Female Figure

Item Details

Description

West Africa, Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana, Lagoon Regions, Akan, Anyi or Agnis people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful, hand-carved wood figure of a female standing atop straight legs and presenting a slender torso, short arms, pointed breasts, square shoulders, an elongated neck, and a large head, all topped by an elaborate, plumed headdress. Enveloped in remains of a creamy white pigment, the fascinating figure displays a serene visage, comprised of sizeable, almond-shaped eyes, a triangular nose, a straight mouth, and a round chin, all flanked by a pair of incised ears. Marks of ceremonial scarification adorn the sculpture, adding striated patterns to her face, neck, chest, and belly. Note the artist's ability to create an abstract interpretation of the human form while also maintaining careful attention to detail, as evident in her detailed fingers and delineated navel! Size: 3" W x 13.7" H (7.6 cm x 34.8 cm); 15" H (38.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Figures like this example are believed to possess supernatural powers and belong to groups of various age associations. Oftentimes they were the property of a soothsayer or healer. This piece was probably created to send messages to spirits believed to rule the world.
