Description
[CUSTER, George Armstrong (1839-1876)]. [GOFF, Orlando S. (1843-1916), photographer]. Cabinet card of George Custer and his sister Margaret Custer Calhoun representing Quaker Peace Commissioners. [Fort Abraham Lincoln, Dakota Territory], 1875.

3 15/16 x 5 15/16 in. albumen cabinet photograph on cardstock mount (very minor small spots).

Taken in 1875 at Fort Abraham Lincoln, North Dakota when officers participated in tableaux. Here, George Armstrong Custer and his sister Margaret Calhoun are dressed as Quaker Peace Commissioners. Custer wears a long wig, a large hat, and a coat with extravagantly long tails. Calhoun is seated with layers of bonnets and a demure cape with her hands primly folded. Catalogued in D. Mark Katz's Custer in Photographs (K-136).

Custer appointed his brother-in-law James Calhoun as a first lieutenant to the 7th Cavalry. The brothers, other relatives, and friends were known as the "Custer Clan." The 7th Cavalry had moved into Fort Abraham Lincoln by 1873 and Custer was its first commander, a position he held until his death.
