Civil War-dated endorsement signed by Custer, with the following written in another hand, "Headquarters ...Cav. Div., November 16th, 1864...Respectfully forwarded approved and recommended." Custer's rank is written in the same unknown hand.
[With:] Studio portrait of Custer as Major General after image originally taken in May 1865 by Mathew Brady & Co., catalogued in D. Mark Katz's Custer in Photographs (K-78).
