Description
Kataro Shirayamadani (1865-1948) for Rookwood Pottery
earthenware Standard Glaze mug with image of a Black boy riding an alligator, shape number 775
Cincinnati, Ohio, 1897
high glazed ceramic
impressed factory marks, incised artist's cypher, wheel ground "X"
6"w x 4 3/4"d x 7"h
Catalog Note:
The image is taken directly from a postcard circulated in the 1890s with different titles but the same boy and gator. It is a strange and somewhat racist image, but it was probably intriguing to Shirayamadani, who would have had little interaction with African Americans before coming to Cincinnati and even fewer with alligators.
