[Sam Houston] Two Handwritten Poems From Houston's Personal Papers
Two poems taken from an archive of Sam Houston's personal papers. The first sheet, 2pp, measuring 7.5" x 12", dated May 1835, contains two separate compositions entitled "Lines composed during a residence on Pascaiola Bay" and "The cerenade" [sic]. The poems, in an unidentified hand, are docketed as "Poetic Effusions, etc., etc., etc." The second sheet, 2pp, measuring 7.75" x 9.75", [circa 1845], contains a poem entitled "Impromptu on reading the 'Mournful heart' by Amelia". The poem, written in an unidentified hand, has ten original stanzas inspired by the poem "Mournful Heart" by Amelia B. Welby (1819-1852), which was published as part of Welby's collected poems in 1845.
The total archive was part of Houston's personal papers and was purchased at auction from Heritage Auctions in March 2017, Lot #51090. Both poems have flattened folds, areas of toning, and light soiling. Some areas of water staining and ink bleed.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
