Description
A cover entirely engrossed by 6th U.S. President John Quincy Adams (1767-1848), as "J.Q. Adams" in the postage section at upper right, and also as "Mrs Susan B. Treadway / Richmond / Va." Stamped "Free" and bearing a "Washington, D.C. / Mar. 28" hand-stamp. A red wax "U.S. House of Representatives" seal is virtually intact verso. Expected weathering and minor grubbiness. Paper folds, and four adhesive tabs discretely positioned over vulnerable intersections of folds verso. A minor area of loss corresponding to the wax seal, else near fine. The unfolded cover measures 8" x 7.75." The folded cover measures 5.25" x 3.75."
John Quincy Adams addressed this cover to his niece, Susan (or Susanna) Boylston Adams Treadway (1796-1884). Susan was the oldest daughter of Charles Adams (1770-1800), John Quincy Adam's younger brother, and thus a granddaughter of 2nd U.S. President John Adams (1725-1826).
The House of Representative wax seal verso could suggest a date range between 1831-1848, when John Quincy Adams served as a Congressman from Massachusetts. Adams had previously served a single presidential term, between 1825-1829.
