Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery female figure of a squat, rotund form that sits upon a pair of curved legs that form the base. The nearly spherical figure features slender arms wrapped around the abdomen, perky breasts, relaxed shoulders, and an impressed necklace with an annular central medallion. The raised head bears dramatically slanted, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, parted lips, annular earspools, and a centrally parted coiffure with incised striations. Remains of red pigment across the face and body allude to just how colorful this figure would have appeared when first created. Size: 2.875" W x 3.8" H (7.3 cm x 9.7 cm); 4.7" H (11.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-William and Jane Frazer, Aspen, Colorado, USA, acquired 1980s; ex-Natalie Wood collection
