Description
1777 History of America MAPS Robertson Voyages Columbus Cortez Magellan Caribbean

“A historical classic! The first successful attempt to write a scholarly history of the Western Hemisphere.” (Griffin 517)

William Robertson was a notable 18th-century Scottish historian, and, according to Humphreys, ‘made significant contributions to the writing of Scottish history and the history of Spain and Spanish America.

A beautiful, rare edition of William Robertson’s ‘History of America.’ This book was “the first sustained attempt to describe the discovery, conquest and settlement of Spanish American since Herrera’s ‘Decadas’ and his biography of Charles V.” (Brading). According to Howes, the book was “the most highly regarded secondary source of its time.” It was an early source on

“the discovery of America and the conquest of Mexico and Peru. A list of about 224 Spanish books and manuscripts, consulted in the preparation of the work, is given at the end of the second volume.” (Sabin).

This volume from the 1777 Strahan edition includes 2 folding maps of South America and the Caribbean Islands.
