Description
1818 BRAZIL Koster Voyages in South America MAPS Portuguese History SLAVERY 2v
Henry Koster was an early 19th-century English explorer known for his, albeit short, life in Brazil. While there, Koster wrote on his experiences in Brazil as well as his observations on slavery, coffee trade and exports, and the influences of Portuguese explorers. His book “Voyages in the North of Brazil” was an important source on the history of Brazil, rivaled only by Robert Southeys account of Brazil. Southey pushed him to write Voyages – a gesture that Koster responded to by translating Southeys famous History of Brazil into Portuguese.
This fine 1818 two-volume first French edition of Kosters “Voyages” is notable for its inclusion of folding maps including plans for the port of Pernambuco.
