Each sonnet is illustrated with a colored decorative capital letter. A little wear, very good condition.

Examples of the first lines of these sonnets includes:- I thought once how Theocritus had sung, Thou hast thy calling to some palace-floor, I lift my heart up solemnly, And therefore if to love can be desert, I never gave a lock of hair away, Let the world's sharpness like a clasping knife, and My future will not copy fair my past...

"Women romantic writers tend to be overly sentimental for me (and I like a good love story!). And poetess' are even more prone to being mawkish. But every now and then you get a woman who can really write about love (Rosa Hartwick Thorpe), and none were better at it than Ms. Browning. No wonder Robert Browning fell in love with her on her letters alone. Watch the Barretts of Wimpole Street, then read Sonnets of the Portuguese, then watch the film again. Ms. Browning, your sonnets took you past every male writer alive or dead. Thank you for this beautiful collection of sonnets." [from a review]
