Description
1860 1st edition John Brown Abolitionist American SLAVERY Civil War Redpath

John Brown was one of the most famous 19th-century American abolitionists, who was determined to find a way to overthrow slavery in the United States. He led anti-slavery forces at various small battles prior to the Civil War, in fact, his pursuit of slave freedom was a major catalyst in the Civil War.

James Redpath’s ‘Public Life of Captain John Brown’ is an accurate biographical sketch of Brown’s abolitionist cause. It supports his efforts to find freedom for slaves and Redpath shows how he endorsed Brown’s views. According to Larned,

“Written by a newspaper reporter, for many years an Abolitionist, and one in touch with the friends of Brown, the work is affectionately if not skillfully done. Many original papers are used. The details of Brown’s Kansas campaign, Virginia insurrection, trial and execution are fully told. Sanborn derived much of his material from this work.”
