Description
1859 1ed History of Tobacco Fairholt Smoking Nicotine Persia Native Americans Cigars
“The principal variety of the plant most commonly grown is the Virginian tobacco, which is that which was first brought to Europe by Sir Francis Drake.”
– Fairholt, Tobacco.
A rare, 19th-century history of tobacco by Fairholt. This book includes illustrations of the tobacco plant, historical relevance, as well as scientific implications, such as nomenclature by Linnaeus. Fairholt also discusses cigars, cigarettes, pipe smoking, snuff, and other forms of nicotine from around the world including Syria, Turkey, Persia, England, and the Americas.
An interesting perspective is portrayed in the stigmas associated with smoking – for instance, smoking is not ‘lady-like’, but many women from around the world “indulge in the weed” (p.68) without it offending anyone. There are also sections dealing with the effects of tobacco on the brain and sinus cavities, and the healing properties that come with smoking. Book filled with in-text illustrations.
