Description
1779 History of America Robertson Columbus Cortez Magellan Mexico MAP Italian 4v
“A historical classic! The first successful attempt to write a scholarly history of the Western Hemisphere.” (Griffin 517)
A rare first edition of William Robertson’s ‘History of America.’ This book was “the first sustained attempt to describe the discovery, conquest and settlement of Spanish American since Herrera’s ‘Decadas’ and his biography of Charles V.” (Brading). According to Howes, the book was “the most highly regarded secondary source of its time.” It was an early source on
“the discovery of America and the conquest of Mexico and Peru. A list of about 224 Spanish books and manuscripts, consulted in the preparation of the work, is given at the end of the second volume.” (Sabin).
This book went through many editions and following the first Dublin and London editions, including this French edition published in Paris. The four volumes deal with European discovery and voyages in the ‘new world’ including the exploration of Christopher Columbus, Hernando Cortez, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, Vasco de Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, Amerigo Vespucci, and each of their central, South, and North American arrivals. It also gives a superb account of Spanish Colonies. Per Larned,
“Book VIII gives one of the best accounts available in English of the Spanish colonial administration and commercial system.” (Larned 403)
This edition was translated out of the original English in Italian by Antonio Pillori. This example includes one large folding map of Mexico.
