Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. mid 20th century CE. A fascinating container carved from avian bone with an open top end and a plugged bottom cavity. Coated in a thick layer of mocha brown decimated earth and adorned with petite white shells arranged in an abstract design, the cylindrical vessel has a bulbous midsection and annular mouth, which holds two dart-like, pointed implements; one made from wood and the other from bamboo. Perhaps used for storing and consuming some sort of drug, this trio is an intriguing example from the peoples of Papua New Guinea! Size: 1.125" W x 8.875" H (2.9 cm x 22.5 cm)
Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection, acquired 1970s to 2000s
