Description
This lot consists of a framed oil painting on canvas, done in the expressionist style of Chaim Soutine (Russian, 1893-1943). Image depicts a handsome woman wearing brilliant red, hands folded in her lap as she stares straight ahead with a bottomless gaze. Hand-painted inscription at lower right corner reads, "Soutine". Framed dimensions approximately 23" x 17.75".
Chaim Soutine (Russian, 1893-1943) was a transplant to Paris who left an indelible mark on the expressionist movement. Soutine was inspired by the works of the great artists (Courbet and Rembrandt among them). Branching from his root tastes in the classics, Soutine eventually prioritized texture, shape, and color over realistic representation, which would help pave the way (just a few years later) for Abstract Expressionism.
