Description
A title page from a famous Picasso photo book boldly signed and dated by its subject, modern Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), as "Picasso / 14.4.69." Picasso's signature and inscription measure 3.75" x 5.75" alone. The title page was excised from the book, trimmed, and laid down on a cardboard mount. Isolated areas of surface loss or adhered traces of other paper. Else very good to near fine. 8.125" x 10" overall including the mount. Accompanied by a commemorative stamp block of Czechoslovakian postage stamps depicting Picasso's monumental work "Guernica." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.
American photojournalist David Douglas Duncan (1916-2018) met Pablo Picasso after 1956, and the pair became close friends. Picasso granted Duncan unique access to his domestic life and later artwork. Duncan's "The Private World of Pablo Picasso" (New York: Ridge Press, 1958) was the first of seven photo books that Duncan would publish about Picasso. Other titles include: "Picasso's Picasso" (1961); "Goodbye Picasso" (1974); "Viva Picasso" (1980); "Picasso and Jacqueline" (1988); "Picasso Paints a Portrait" (1996); and "Picasso and Lump" (2006). Duncan's photographs of Picasso and his second wife Jacqueline Roque (1927-1986) are especially prized, as Picasso depicted Jacqueline in approximately 400 portraits.
