Mississippian & Caddo Stone Projectile Points (84)
Mississippian & Caddo Stone Projectile Points (84)
Item Details
Description
Native American, Midwestern to Southern United States, Caddo & Mississippian, ca. 900 to 1500 CE. A fine collection of 84 hand knapped stone projectile points all flaked from creamy chert and quartzite stones. The petite blades showcase the amazing control and skill the artisan needed to shape each blade - a single stroke could easily destroy the delicate fins or notches. In this collection are identifiable types with characteristic notches, flaking patterns, and serrations, including Harrell, Haskell, Toyah, and Cahokia. The stones themselves range from semi-translucent pink and white quartz to beige and warm brown chert. The points are grouped in sets of 14 and displayed in modern Riker cases, and could be regrouped or arranged as one wanted. Size of larger points: 1" L x 0.5" W (2.5 cm x 1.3 cm); case: 6.25" L x 5.25" W (15.9 cm x 13.3 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
