Description
Native American, Midwestern to Southern United States, Mississippian, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A pair of ceremonial and utilitarian stone tools: an elongated handle with a spade like head known as a spud or spatulate form, and a thick blade head known as a celt. The spud spatulate is a ceremonial form of a celt with a long stem, a broad flared bit end, all usually made from a special material to convey status or rank. The stone is inherently beautiful- a mottled greenstone with dark and lighter green veining. The surface is highly polished and smooth with very little signs of use, if any, while the smaller celt has a thick and rough butt end opposite a flared cutting edge with nicks and wear from use. Utilitarian Celts could be used as handheld tools for a variety of tasks such as scraping, cutting, digging, or they could be hafted onto handles for greater leverage. Size (spud): 15.25" L x 2.5" W (38.7 cm x 6.4 cm)
