CIVIL WAR SOILDER'S LETTERS TO FAMILY LOT OF 5

Lot of 5 letters sent by Civil War soldiers to family members. Dates range from 1862-1865. Includes:

  • Letter to "Brother John", "It was good to hear from you...Tell mom and papa that I will write soon...Thank you for all of your kindness, I am in your debt and leave you my interest in the mill. "The army has had a hard fight and gained a great victory in Tennessee, I think of the destruction of human lives, but I have not yet seen any of the killed or wounded, save officers" "Give my love to Granney" signed "James. G", dated January 14, 1862.
  • Letter to "Dear Father", "I will now try to steal a few moments and write you how we are doing and have been since we came to camp....When we arrived at camp we formed the 32nd Reg...the state of things produced no little dissatisfaction and discontent....we are unhappy to be presumably sent here by the Belmont Co. .. and then to be divided and sold into the companies by Col. Cook is truly discouraging....Soldiering is an uncertain business and to me has been discouraging, but I hope for the future." "Last Sabbath was my first in camp....we have some very good boys who have their Bibles & use them, we had prayer meeting last night" Give my love to Mother, yours Jas." dated August 26, 1862. With cover.
  • Letter to "Dear Brother John", "Your last welcome letter of the 11th...I would have replied immediately but I have had neither time nor opportunity...last Saturday 13th...to drive away a company of Morgan's Guerilla Thieves....decided to take advantage of their absence dashed onto the line as the freight train loaded with 300 horse came in, they of course captured the train...they also robbed the Express office for $1600, they expected to capture the passenger train but were foiled...more than 100 have been captured and 2225 of the horses recovered....Yesterday was the first quiet day I have had since we came here." "We are fortifying our position & may remain for some time, but I do not like the position it very hard to defend and it would not take a very large force with artillery to pick us off. We need Calvary Scouts" signed "Your Brother, Jas. G., dated June 18, 1863.
  • Letter to "My Dear Brother", "Court has just adjourned for the day....I was glad to hear from you it has been almost 3 weeks since I received your last...am glad to know you are well." "I have just heard word from the Regt. they have been seeing rough times, one of the boys from my Co. came up to help with an ambulance train. He says that the regt has been under fire ever since they have been on the front....The Regt. is in the 3rd Brigade 2nd Division, 23rd Army corps...The 23rd corps has done more hard fighting in this campaign than anyone in Sherman's Army since the countermovement...marched 22miles fighting...driving the rebels 60 miles along." "Our court martials consist of 9 members, a president & one Jude Admiral, a prosecuting attorney and jurors. I am one of the latter." Signed "James", dated June 20, 1864.
  • Letter to "Dear Sister" "Yours of this 2nd was received last evening, the 3rd since I left home...."I have nothing new or startling to tell you, only we have been mustered all year. Orders are received of this month from the War Dept"...I am glad your fruit is doing well at home...miss...sweet potatoes, cucumbers and big watermelon" signed "Love, James", dated June 11, 1865.
