EARLY 20TH C. GAR EPHEMERA POSTCARDS, GUIDE & LETTERS

Early 20th century Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) ephemera, including:

  • Souvenir postcard from the GAR National Encampment in Rochester, NY from August 21-26, 1911. The postcard features image of drummer Major George Washington Friedly and Major Tracy.
  • Letter from George A. Hosley, Dept. of Massachusetts commander, supporting the creation of "a Home for the needy and destitute veterans of the Civil War and their wives," dated June 29, 1912. Signed by Hosley and Wilfred A. Wetherbee, assistant adjutant general of the Dept. of Massachusetts.
  • Meeting announcement postcard for the GAR Hubbard V. Smith Woman's Relief Corps, No. 82 in Athol, MA. The card was sent to Lucy A. Thompson in Athol. Postmarked January 11, 1916.
  • Guide from the GAR National Encampment in Milwaukee, WI from September 2-7, 1923. The guide has information about hotels, things to do in Milwaukee and the members of the encampment executive committee.
  • Postcard from the GAR National Encampment in Boston, MA from August 10-16, 1924. The postcard includes a welcome message from Boston Mayor James M. Curley.
  • Postcard from the GAR National Encampment in Washington, DC from September 20-26, 1936. The postcard features the 1865 painting "Grant and His Generals" by Norwegian artist Ole Peter Hansen Balling. The reverse of the postcard has information about the painting and a stamp advertising the GAR encampment.
  • Letter with envelope from Ira R. Wildman, past commander of the Dept. of Connecticut, sending Christmas greetings to Mable Clever of Long Beach, CA. Letter dated December 22, 1929. Postmarked December 23, 1929 from Danbury, CT. Includes name card of Orrin M. Price, Dept. of Connecticut commander, of Norwich, CT. There are handwritten names on the back of the card.
Condition
Good, exhibits wear. Edges of Hosley letter torn in two places.
