Premium “Abraham Lincoln” Fully Signed Military Commission Together With This Soldiers’ United States Military Academy Ornate Signed Diploma From West Point
ABRAHAM LINCOLN (February 12, 1809 - April 15, 1865). 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April of 1865.
July 2, 1864-Dated Civil War Period, Partially-Printed Ornately Engraved Vellum Military Commission is Signed, “Abraham Lincoln” as President, Extremely Fine. This impressive Document is made to William A Jones, 1 page, measuring 19.5” x 15.75” and having its original blue embossed Seal intact at the upper left. This is a clean, bright and very well printed document, has all manuscript portions fresh and bold. Also Cosigned by “E. M. Stanton” as Lincoln’s Secretary of War. This Commission appointing Jones as “First Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers.” Typical folds, the original blue War Department Embossed Seal is still affixed but worn and split along a fold.

This gorgeous engraved document displays an American Heraldic Eagle vignette above with the usual Crossed Flags, Militaria and Flourishes below. The sharp, dark brown ink, full signature “Abraham Lincoln” has a clean fold just above the top of the lower case letters and measures a huge 3.25” across. This signature is excellent and distinct overall. Now for the second exciting and mated part to this lot...

Also Included with the Abraham Lincoln Signed Military Commission, is Jones’ official Signed, United States Military Academy Vellum Diploma graduating from West Point. It is dated June 11, 1864 and measures 25” x 18.75”. That is just TWO DAYS prior to the Lincoln Commission showing Jones enlisted as a First Lieutenant in the Union Army. Signatures of a number of the Academy Instructors are hand signed at bottom, headed by the Superintendent of the Academy. This Diploma is dated just 22 days before Jones received his Abraham Lincoln Signed Commission on July 2nd, and went off to the war. This impressive, highly ornate Diploma is well printed upon thin Vellum and has excellent overall eye appeal. The last example of a similar Document was in our EAHA Auction of January 14, 2006, Lot 2066, dated in 1876, graded EF, selling for $1,460. Alone, this Diploma would look great on display. If mated with the Lincoln Commission, made to this same West Point graduate, this awesome set would be a remarkable mated pair for display. (2 items)
