Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec to Proto-Maya culture, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. Skillfully carved from a beautiful piece of jade with beige and cream inclusions, this pendant is shaped like a jaguar tooth or claw, and bilaterally drilled for suspension. Jaguar imagery symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world; hence, warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. String cut lines along the interior curve accentuate the polished surface. The pendant is wearable and strung on a modern cord with silver-plated lobster clasp.
