Greek Attic Pottery Lekythos - Herakles & Nemean Lion
Item Details
Description
Greece, Athens, ca. early 5th century BCE. A fabulous pottery lekythos featuring an action-packed depiction of Herakles (Roman Hercules) wrestling the Nemean lion rendered via the black figure technique with incised details. Displaying immense physical strength and courage, Herakles' adventures in the Greco-Roman world were narrated in the canonical Twelve Labors, the first occurring when King Eurystheus asked Herakles to bring him the skin of a fierce lion that terrorized the hillside around Nemea - a seemingly impossible task. Despite how initially Herakles' arrows were utterly useless against this threatening beast, our hero ultimately succeeded, clutching the lion in his muscular arms all the while strategically avoiding its claws, finally choking the wild feline to death. Here, Herakles is shown during this final chokehold flanked by a pair of figures who hold weapons. The ancient vessel presents a piriform body with a carinated shoulder, a narrow neck, a ribbon-form handle, and a flared spout, all sitting upon a discoid foot. Size: 2" W x 5.5" H (5.1 cm x 14 cm)

The areas above and below the central narrative are adorned with black-painted, striated and stippled motifs.
