c. 1775 Revolutionary War Hand-forged Entrenching Tool
c. 1775 American Revolutionary War Period, Hand-forged Iron Entrenching Tool, Choice Very Fine.
This authentic spade-shaped Wrought-Iron Entrenching Tool head measures 7.25" across and 9.5" tall from the top of the handle loop to the tip of the spade. A wooden handle would have been inserted into the forged Iron loop at top, allowing the blade to be used to dig battle entrenchments during the Revolutionary War. The handle loop is particularly interesting as it was fashioned by a blacksmith by folding the two opposite pieces on top of each other. This example appears to have been the type used battle sites, as the surfaces show a rich deep patina. A notation in white appears on the upper left corner of one face reading: "Rev War Entrenching Tool ca 1770". An exciting, rarely encountered museum quality hand-forged Revolutionary War entrenching tool.
