Exceptional Rare Design Naval Midshipman's Wooden "Pressgang" Tool with Leather Attached Weighted Head
c. 1770 Revolutionary War Era, Naval Midshipman's Wooden "Pressgang" Tool with Leather attached Weighted Head, British, Used, Very Fine.
This large 19.25" long, Wood and Leather Naval Pressgang tool is of a highly unique design, very different and distinct from any we have offered. The 4.75" x 1.75" weighted head is attached by a thick leather strap which allows it to swing wide for added striking force. There is an original twine rope wrist strap attached, as shown. Minor 2.5" age split at top end, turned grip at the handle, wear from actual use and tiny scattered worm holes noted adding to its authenticity and age. Pressgang tools were used for keeping sailors in line, and for Pressgang "recruitment" often used to abduct likely sailors to serve on British ships, as well as sometimes being useful during a boarding attack. A rare museum quality design type.
