Jefferson and Madison Signed Four Language Ship's Passport
1p partially printed, measuring 19.75" x 16", New York, dated September 29, 1802. A four language ship's passport boldly signed "Thomas Jefferson" as President. Additionally signed "James Madison" as Secretary of State and countersigned by David Gelston, Collector of the Customs at New York. The document grants permission to "James Webb of New York, master or commander of the Ship called the Maryland of the burthen of 3/14 tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of New York bound for London and laden with Ashes, Bark, Cotton, Crackers, Turpentine, Boards, Spars & Tummels…" With two large white paper seals intact at the left. The document has flattened folds, with separations, holes, and edge chipping. Paper loss in places, affecting some of the printed text but neither of the signatures. Light toning and foxing throughout. The document has been mounted and framed to the overall size of 31.25" x 27.5"
