This lot consists of an unframed oil painting on canvas, done in the Cubist style of modern artist Georges Braque (French, 1882-1963). This earth-toned abstraction is a unique harmony of overlapping value and shape. Hand-painted inscription at lower left reads, "G. Braque". Unframed measurements approximately 23.5" x 15.5".

Reverse side of canvas features two affixed paper labels. One label reads, "The Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Leigh B. Block. Chicago, Illinois." The second label bears the title, "Musee d'Orsay".

Georges Braque (French, 1882-1963) was a pre-eminent painter, collage artist, sculptor, and printmaker known for playing a critical role in the development of both Fauvism and Cubism. Braque possessed a particular fascination for geometrics and "simultaneous perspective". He famously described fragmenting objects as "a way of getting closest to the object", Braque went on to say that "Fragmentation helped me to establish space and movement in space".
