Description
This lot consists of an unframed oil painting on canvas, done in the Cubist style of modern artist Georges Braque (French, 1882-1963). This earth-toned abstraction is a unique harmony of overlapping value and shape. Hand-painted inscription at lower right reads, "G. Braque". A strong, charming addition to any collection. Unframed dimensions approximately 27" x 23".
Reverse side of piece features a handwritten inscription which reads, "G. Braque". It also features an affixed paper label.
Georges Braque (French, 1882-1963) was a pre-eminent painter, collage artist, sculptor, and printmaker known for playing a critical role in the development of both Fauvism and Cubism. Braque possessed a particular fascination for geometrics and "simultaneous perspective". He famously described fragmenting objects as "a way of getting closest to the object", Braque went on to say that "Fragmentation helped me to establish space and movement in space".
