Description
This lot consists of a framed oil painting on canvas, done in the Fauvist style of Georges Rouault (French, 1871-1958). Image depicts a huddle of human figures, all cast in cool earth tones and bold line. Hand-painted inscription at lower left corner reads, "G. Rouault". A handsome addition to any collection. This framed piece measures approximately 19.5" x 24.5".
Reverse side of canvas features a number of structural supports. A stamp at the center of the reverse side reads, "Rey & Cie. Paris."
Georges Rouault (French, 1871-1958) began his art career as an apprentice to a glass painter and restorer. It is said that this early experience lead to Rouault's later predilection for thick outlines and deep jewel tones. Rouault first exhibited his work with the Fauvists at the turn of the 20th century, then, in the 1910s, he gravitated toward a group of artists who would later become known as the Expressionists.
