Description
This lot consists of a framed oil painting on canvas, done in the haunting Expressionist style of Edvard Munch (Norwegian, 1863-1944). A hand-painted inscription in lower left corner reads, "E. Munch". Overall framed measurements approximately 15.5" x 17.25".
This brooding, atmospheric image portrays a woman standing at a murky water's edge. Her ghostly visage strikes a bold contrast against the rest of the cool and moody scene.
Reverse side of piece features a black wax seal and an affixed paper label.
Edvard Munch (Norwegian, 1863-1944) was one of the most distinguished painters of the 20th century. Munch uninhibitedly delved into the darkest depths of his own psychological and emotional spectrums, producing works that still haunt and delight the senses. Munch was closely connected with Expressionism, a modernist art movement that radically distorts reality in order to convey a very real thought or feeling. Today, the collected works of Edvard Munch show us a world saturated with meaning and experience.
