Description
This lot consists of an acrylic painting on canvas, done in the modern style of Cubist artist Rufino Tamayo (Mexican, 1899-1991). "Tamayo 51" is written by hand on reverse side of canvas. This richly colored image features two abstracted human figures who are encircled by a field of color that is distinct from that of the rest of the picture. This shape creates an immediate intimacy and tenderness in the visual space. A handsome piece that is sure to highlight any collector's gallery. Unframed dimensions approximately 25.5" x 31.75".
Reverse side of piece features a handwritten inscription (as described in first paragraph) which reads, "Tamayo 51". This inscription is further accompanied by an affixed paper label which reads, "Galeria de Arte Misrachi. Autor [Artist]: Rufino Tamayo. Tecnica [Medium]: Oleo sobre lienzo [oil on canvas]. Fecha [Date]: 1987. Medidas [Measurements]: 81 x 66 cm. No. 04565."
Rufino Tamayo (Mexican, 1899-1991) was born in Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico, the son of a seamstress and a shoemaker. As a young orphan, Tamayo was influenced early on by his Zapotec ancestry. RufinoTamayo, along with other muralists such as Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros, came to define the twentieth century in Mexican art. He is known for combining modern European painting styles with the most powerful tenets of Mexican folk art.
