Description
3rd-4th century AD. A bronze head of the night goddess Nox, with crescent moon over her rich hair framing her face, locks and curls covering the ears. See a similar head with bust in Rolland, H., Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 475. 140 grams, 83mm (3 1/4"). From a North Yorkshire collection formed since the 1980s; thence by descent. In Graeco-Roman mythology, the night (Nox) falls within the number of intermediate deities. In the Homeric epic, she appears as the mother of sleep and death, and is called the one who subjugates gods and mortals. Hesiod's Theogony attributes to her a line of thirteen sons, most of whom are only personified abstractions: they represent the sub-lunar darkness, while Erebos is the expression of the underground night.
