American, ca. 1920s. A beautiful sepia photographic portrait of Mary Pickford (1893-1979), a starlet of the Silent film era, signed "Sincerely yours, Mary Pickford" on the lower right. Pickford is presented bust-length, wearing a beautiful beaded gown and pearls, looking out at the viewer with her classic, delicate features and finger wave bob hairstyle. Set in an attractive wooden frame with wonderful incised and painted details, this photograph would make a wonderful addition for any collector interested in the history of film. Born Gladys Smith, Pickford began her career as "Baby Gladys" touring with various road shows. At the young age of 14, David Belasco gave her a major role in his play "The Warrens of Virginia," and Belasco also renamed her Mary Pickford. Two years later, D. W. Griffith hired Pickford, and she quickly became one of the most popular stars in film history. In 1975, Pickford received a special Academy Award recognizing her contribution to the American film industry.
