Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 100 BCE to 400 CE. A fine polychrome bowl with a wide basin and an abstract motif painted across its exterior. The bowl rests on a well-constructed round bottom with accenting vertical walls delineated by a rich cream color and alternating linear abstractions in shades of burgundy and ochre. The interior basin is painted in a uniform red hue that matches the red tone found in the exterior design. Nazca pottery is known for its characteristically thin-walled and well-formed constructions adorned by abstract designs in strong contrast to the realism exhibited in the works of their contemporary to the north, the Moche. Walls are repaired from several pieces, with restoration to the interior. Noticeable break lines along exterior have been filled and sanded smooth. Light chipping to painted motif. Otherwise, in good overall condition and presents well.
