Description
Milda Spindler (American/New Orleans, 1927-2021) , "Impression of a Louisiana Bayou", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 24 in. x 30 1/4 in., framed. “I think it is important to talk about a person’s individuality as a form of freedom of choice, which was so lacking during the war years. Creating art is my way of expressing individuality.” ~ Milda SpindlerNote: Milda Bartnikas Spindler was born in Lithuania, and she developed an early appreciation for nature and art. Displaced by World War II, her family spent the war years travelling between Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Austria. Separated from her family in 1945, Spindler reunited with her mother and siblings in Austria following the war, and they settled in a United Nations displaced persons’ camp in Augsburg Germany. Fluent in Lithuanian, German and English with some knowledge of Russian and Czech, Spindler was hired by the United Nations as a translator for the refugee camps. In late 1947, Spindler met her future husband, Albert Spindler, a soldier in the United States Army. In 1948, the couple emigrated to Canada and eventually then to Upstate New York, where Spindler raised four boys and studied at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute in Utica. In 1971, the family moved to suburban New Orleans, and Spindler completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at The University of New Orleans in 1979. She studied under local luminaries such as Ida Kohlmeyer, Jim Richard, and Doyle Gertjejensen. Spindler was inspired by the landscape, flora and fauna of the Gulf Coast and often painted beneath live oak trees on her small acreage in southern Mississippi. She sketched, painted and developed a unique style of printmaking that perfectly captures the light, shadow and movement of the bayous and swamps of her adopted home. The oil painting offered here is reminiscent of the artist’s distinctive printmaking technique with fluid mark-making, strong lines and a verdant color palette utilized to convey the humid and light-filtering atmosphere of the bayou.
