Item Details
Description
Mildred Wohl (American/New Orleans, 1906-1977) , "Abstraction", oil on masonite, unsigned, 60 in. x 48 in., framed. Note: A native New Orleanian, Mildred Wohl studied at the Newcomb Art School at Tulane University. She had her first solo exhibition at the Sky Club in 1959 followed by a show at the Downtown Gallery in 1961. Wohl joined the Orleans Gallery in 1966 and was an active member until the artist collective closed in early 1973. Wohl worked in the style of Abstract Expressionism with a unique palette different from that of her sister and the highly acclaimed artist, Ida Kohlmeyer. While Kohlmeyer’s work is most often grounded in a field of white, Wohl embraced the enigmatic colors of black and brown in her paintings. The occasional addition of a vivid hue such as red, seen in the work offered here, acts to accentuate the mystery of the surrounding composition. An exploration of the dynamic relationship between vertical and horizontal forms, expressive brushwork and characteristic palette defined Wohl’s career, resulting in a distinctive and important body of work.
