By descent to the present owner.
Born in Belarus, Russia in 1881, Manievich studied at the Kiev Art School and at the Academy of Art in Munich. He lived in Moscow from 1916 to 1917 and cofounded the Ukrainian Academy of Fine Arts in Kiev. Manievich's son was killed during the devastating pogrom of 1919, which left the Kiev ghetto in ruins and he immigrated to New York in 1921. The Jewish Museum owns his major oil, Destruction of the Ghetto and many other museums around the world hold his work. He died in New York in 1942.
Peretz Hirshbein was born in 1880 in Grodno, Poland. He is recognized as the author of some of the finest works ever written for the Yiddish theater, earning broad recognition as the "Yiddish Maeterlinck". His plays, which often espoused a Symbolist style, and his influential travelling theater troupe made him a star of the golden age of Yiddish theater. He also worked in the film industry and died in Los Angeles in 1948.
